England will sign off an encouraging Rugby World Cup with Friday’s bronze final against Argentina at the Stade de France having lost 16-15 to South Africa in the last four rng
Here, the PA news agency examines five things we learned from their progress through the tournament rng
England in the right handsThe rancour of the latter stages of the Eddie Jones era saw the bond rng between England and their fans fray, but the act of defiance produced on a sodden Paris night has the capacity to reconnect team and supporters rng
Although it ended in heartbreak, there was much to admire as the Springboks were out-Bokked by a wet-weather masterclass devised by Steve Borthwick rng
Expectations heading into the World Cup were at an all-time low, yet Borthwick drove them to the brink of a World Cup final and the head coach described as a rugby “genius” by wing Jonny May has proved he is the right man to lead England forward rng
End of an eraSupporters might have to show patience as tricky waters lie ahead in the form of the inevitable rebuild for Australia 2027 rng
Stalwarts such as Courtney Lawes, Jonny May, Dan Cole and Joe Marler are likely to have played their last Tests and while there is an impressive core of players who are in the early phase of their career – Ben Earl, Freddie Steward, Marcus Smith and Alex Mitchell among them – it could be some time before Borthwick’s vision for England really takes shape rng
Break the World Cup cycleUnder Jones everything was sacrificed at the alter of the World Cup, repeated poor Six Nations performances explained away by their place in the bigger picture rng
But the gut-wrenching defeat to South Africa, which was won by a 79th-minute Handre Pollard penalty, was an indicator of just how hard the tournament is to win rng
The Webb Ellis Trophy remains the ultimate prize, but it is just part of the sport’s landscape and should not be prioritised at the expense of other competitions rng
Red Rose greatIt did not need a strong World Cup to confirm Lawes as an all-time England great, but over the last two months, he provided emphatic confirmation nonetheless rng
The second row-turned blindside flanker retires from Test rugby after the tournament, a 34-year-old veteran of 105 caps, who saved his best performances for the biggest games rng
As a back-row warrior with sharp rugby instincts, he leaves giant boots to fill rng
Martin the enforcerWhile the English game says farewell to one ultra-physical back-five forward, Saturday hinted at the birth of another rng
George Martin was making only his fourth start, yet the 22-year-old rookie was the dominant second row on a pitch also roamed by Eben Etzerng beth and Maro Itoje, making thunderous tackles and offering close-quarter muscle, particularly in mauls rng
The type of brutish presence every pack needs, he should become a fixture in England’s 23 for years to come rng

Eddie Howe had admitted the hardest part is yet to come for Sandro Tonali after watching him play a cameo role in Newcastle’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace rng
The 23-year-old Italy international, who could face a lengthy ban if he is found to have breached rng betting rules by an ongoing investigation in Italy, was applauded warmly by the Toon Army before, during and after Saturday’s game at St James’ Park rng
Tonali and his club do not yet know when he will discover his fate, but head coach Howe is convinced the support he has received to date will help him whatever comes his way rng
Howe said: “Let’s wait and see, but yes, I think the hardest part is ahead regardless of what happens rng
“Immediately, you get a lot of attention and people are talking about the situation rng
He’s had the love of the supporters today, but that’s difficult to maintain over a long period of time rng
Who knows what’s ahead?“I just think it’s great for him to know he’s got the support, not just of the senior management at the rng football club and the manager, but also the support of the supporters and they’re the most important people rng
”Tonali was introduced as a 69th-minute replacement for Bruno Guimaraes with the Magpies already four goals to the good in what could conceivably be his final game for several months if he is found to have broken the rules and is suspended rng
Whether he is able to be involved in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tyneside remains to be seen, but whichever team Howe sends out will kick off brimming with confidence after a comprehensive win over the Eagles rng
Jacob Murphy set the ball rolling with a fourth-minute lob which owed a great deal to good fortune – Palace boss Roy Hodgson described it as a “freak” goal – and further strikes from Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff before the break and Callum Wilson after it wrapped up the points with the minimum of fuss rng
Howe said: “It was a really important game today rng
It can’t be underestimated how tough those games are because you don’t have a full squad, we’re having to manage players who have travelled a long way and had a big mental load for their countries rng
“So I’m really pleased with the players’ response to that because these are very tough games rng
“Crystal Palace don’t concede many goals rng
We knew the first goal today was going to be really, really important and thankfully we got it quite early rng
”There's nothing really positive to say from our point of viewCrystal Palace boss Roy HodgsonHodgson’s emotions were understandably different after his best-laid plans were ripped apart before the break rng
He said: “We came here thinking and believing that we could give Newcastle a good game and maybe even make life a little bit difficult for them, but we fell woefully short in that department rng
“The first half was really nowhere near what we’ve been able to do up to now and what I thought we would still do despite the fact that this is a tough ask against such a good team because they are a hard team to defend against rng
“But it didn’t work out and at half-time, we were just looking really at salvaging something from the game and not going away totally and utterly dejected because we’d conceded even more goals than the four we conceded rng
“There’s nothing really positive to say from our point of view rng
