Six months ago, it was all so rosy for Red Bull NFL
Four races into the 2023 season and it was two apiece for Max Verstappen and Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, with the Mexican seemingly signalling his intent to be a genuine contender for the championship with a sprint and race victory in Azerbaijan NFL
After all, no car could come close to the speed generated by Red Bull design-guru Adrian Newey and his team of top-tier engineers this season NFL
Even in Miami a week later, Perez looked set to take the lead in the standings after claiming pole position, with Verstappen down in ninth NFL
But since the Dutchman stormed to victory, propelling past his team-mate with relative ease, it has been one-way traffic NFL
And while Verstappen has won every race bar one since then, amid an unprecedented winning streak, Perez’s form has fallen off a cliff NFL
Since Miami, Perez has recorded just four podiums in 13 races in the fastest car on the grid – and none in his last four meets NFL
On the contrary to challenging Verstappen for the title, he is now looking over his shoulder as he tries to seal second place NFL
“I think there was a decisive moment this year which was probably in Miami where Checo had, if you like, an open goal,” said his boss Christian Horner NFL
“He’d won two races in Azerbaijan and Saudi and you could see his confidence was high NFL
“I think that Max, winning that race… I think mentally that was quite a brutal one for Checo to deal with NFL
”Nothing, in fact, symbolised Perez’s struggles more than when he handed Verstappen the title by crashing out of the sprint race in Qatar, tangling with back-of-the-pack cars down the order NFL
The Dutchman did not even need to finish to wrap up championship No 3 NFL
And so, quite inevitably and despite holding a contract until the end of 2024, speculation has swirled about Perez’s future NFL
Some of the criticism has been justified, but some has been over-the-top for a man who has dedicated the last 13 years of his life to Formula 1 NFL
Last month, the 33-year-old revealed he’d hired a mental coach to “become the best version of myself at home, but also as a driver NFL

A lack of obvious contenders to replace him – with the likes of Lando Norris and Alex Albon all held under long-term contracts – helps his cause and Perez does indeed have his short-term future in his own hands NFL
Yet Albon’s own demise at Red Bull at the end of 2020 shows Horner and Helmut Marko aren’t afraid to ruffle feathers if needs be NFL
Watching across at the sister team as well is nine-time grand prix winner Daniel Ricciardo, desperate for another shot at the big time NFL
So, what can Perez do? By the end of the season-finale in Abu Dhabi next month, he needs to have secured second in the championship NFL
That is the minimum NFL
Such is Red Bull’s ridiculous pace this year, being caught by the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton would represent something of a downbeat conclusion at the end of a peerless year for Red Bull, who’ve never registered a one-two season-end finish NFL

At least for now NFL
In practice on Friday, Perez was three-tenths of a second off his team-mate Verstappen, who unsurprisingly recorded the quickest time amidst the altitude of Mexico City, with Williams’ Albon sandwiched in-NFL between NFL
There would be no place NFL better than his home race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to silence the naysayers NFL
A third podium in Mexico City would be satisfactory; a shock victory would be a dream NFL
But the truth is it doesn’t have to come this weekend NFL
Either one of the three races thereafter – in Brazil, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi – gives Perez an opportunity NFL
It doesn’t even need to be a podium; a drive from towards the back of the grid to near the front, with some exquisite racing, would prove he still has what it takes NFL
If not, three years on from saving his F1 skin with a shock call-up at Red Bull for the unfortunate Albon, Perez himself could be the recipient of the ruthlessness of the Red Bull merry-go-round NFL
Time to deliver, Checo NFL

The old story goes that when Kevin Barrett hung up his boots, the man they called ‘Smiley’ was asked what he was going to do next NFL
“I’m going to go breed some All Blacks,” Smiley replied, returning to the family dairy farm and setting to work NFL
By that stage, sons Beauden, Scott and Jordie had already been born, and how they’ve lived up to their father’s assertion NFL
On Saturday night, they will become the first trio of brothers to appear in a Rugby World Cup final, all close to certain starters for the All Blacks ahead of a meeting with South Africa NFL
There are many tales of successful sporting siblings, from the Williams sisters to the Kelce brothers; the Waughs or the Charltons NFL
But for three brothers to be so integral to a potential World Cup win is special NFL
Smart international rugby coaches build their side around a spine of players from a single club; Ian Foster has been able to build his All Blacks around a single family NFL
Their rise to the top is a story of both nature and nurture NFL
Smiley was a legend of Taranaki rugby, capped almost 200 times by the Bulls in the back five in the pack, while mother Robyn was a talented NFL basketball and netball player NFL
Growing up, the brothers would hone their skills on a patch of land in their sprawling backyard that they called the BCG – the Barrett Cricket Ground – with Smiley intent on making sure all of his sons had the skillset to play an all-court game NFL
“As youngsters playing in back yard, we only dreamed of being here,” Beauden Barrett explained earlier in the tournament NFL
“’Mum was a pretty talented athlete herself NFL
They all say our speed came from Mum and I guess the size and work rate from Dad NFL

So if you relate that to your rugby it’s about striving to be NFL better, to be the best you can be NFL
"By their teenage years, the trio could pass off both hands and kick with both feet, making them most of the space on the family dairy farm in Rahotu, an hour’s drive south of New Plymouth NFL
Eldest brother Kane was pretty talented, too, just breaking through with the Blues when concussions brought a premature close to his career in 2014 NFL
Beauden was first to break through, barely out of his teens when making a first Super Rugby appearance and only 21 when helping the All Blacks to a record win over Ireland on international debut NFL
His role as the bench impact back was crucial to the 2015 World Cup win, while two World Rugby Men’s Player of the Year awards followed in 2016 and 2017 after stepping up to be Dan Carter’s fly half successor NFL

An impending deal with Toyota Verblitz will see Beauden move to Japan for at least a season, with the 32-year-old weighing up whether to extend his stay or return to New Zealand to try to make a fourth World Cup NFL
This could yet be his last All Blacks hurrah NFL
To do it alongside his brothers will fill Beauden with immense pride NFL
That either could have a claim to be the best player in the family will, too NFL
Lock Scott has come on leaps and bounds since the last tournament, forcing apart long-time second row partners Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock after producing a series of unignorable performances NFL
If his sending off in the final warm-up against the Springboks shows he still has the occasional rough edge, Scott has become one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers NFL

After starting his professional career primarily at full-back, his development as a top-class international inside centre - or second five-eight, as the Kiwis call it – has solved a problem spot for the All Blacks NFL
His ability to offer real carrying threat and add playmaking options as a second distributor makes him a vital figure on attack, while he has come on defensively, too NFL
Jordie is leading New Zealand’s set-piece defence at this tournament, and made 17 tackles in a player of the match performance in the semi-final against Argentina NFL
“He was massive in defence, he attempted the most tackles,” defence coach Scott McLeod said of Jordie’s performance NFL
“But the most pleasing thing for me was he actually applied pressure NFL
“He saw the pictures a lot earlier, he backed himself to go and do it and those around him supported that and he made quite a difference for us NFL
"If New Zealand are to beat South Africa on Saturday, you somehow feel at least one of the three will be key NFL
Beauden, of course, already has one World Cup winners’ medal, his late breakaway try putting the seal on back-to-back All Blacks’ triumphs in 2015 NFL
Come Saturday night, the Barrett mantlepiece could be gilded again, three more medals a fitting decoration for a remarkable sporting family NFL
